Absolute beginners are invited to join us to learn the basics of British Sign Language. Immerse yourself in this interactive course, which will provide you with the skills and confidence to communicate with those who have deafness or hearing loss. You will learn a multitude of signs – topics which include: finger spelling, family, emotions, numbers, colours and much more. You will be taught to understand facial expressions, hand shapes and tips for fluency, all of which lead you to communicate using British Sign Language.
British Sign Language - An Introduction
No experience required. Ideally you will be hearing and able to use your fingers easily.
Interactive teaching – games, props, sign singing (Sign supported English). Group work and 1:1 work. Handouts. Continual re-cap.
You will be able to fingerspell and use your newly acquired skills in sign language to ask relevant everyday questions and hold general basic conversations with those who have deafness or are hard of hearing.
Please bring along something to write with, to write on and to file it in.
There will be no homework given. However, to become more proficient practise would be extremely beneficial.
At the start of the course you will be given your own individual learning plan. Your tutor will record your entry level and together you will track your progress and understanding on a weekly basis.
We will support learners to make informed choices about their next steps by providing appropriate individual and/or group information, advice, and/or guidance tailored to need and desired outcomes. On completion of this course you will have gained new skills in an interesting area of study. The course is an identified progression route into accredited provision/further study, eg British Sign Language Level 1, or employment.
