This course provides a general introduction to counselling. You will gain a basic understanding of counselling skills to help other people and will deepen your understanding of the emotional needs of yourself and others. You will also learn about basic interpersonal and counselling skills which are transferable to a range of voluntary and paid opportunities in the health, social care, justice and other sectors.
The course covers the difference between counselling and other helping relationships, the use of helping skills, and a general introduction to counselling theory. A certificate of attendance will be issued on successful completion of the course.

Required Skills
None required. You should be prepared to talk about yourself and share your thoughts and feelings with the group.
Teaching Method
The course will be delivered as a series of presentations and discussions led by the tutor plus skills practice in small groups.
Outcomes
You will learn basic counselling and listening skills.
Materials required
Notebook & pen for notes.
Homework required
None required.
Assessment
At the start of the course you will be given your own individual learning plan. Your tutor will record your entry level and together you will track your progress and achievements.
Progression to
We will support learners to make informed choices about their next steps by providing appropriate individual and/or group information, advice, and/or guidance tailored to need and desired outcomes. This course provides a good base for learners wanting to study for a counselling qualification. It allows you to gain new skills and is an identified progression route into accredited provision eg the Counselling Diploma, Level 4, or employment, and learners will be given an insight into these opportunities.
