Required Skills You should be able to use your sewing machine for straight and zigzag stitching.
Teaching Method Your tutor will discuss and demonstrate techniques, which you will then practise. Each week you will build on the techniques of the previous week. You will be given handouts to aid learning and will find inspiration from examples of fabrics and colours.
Outcomes You will be able to use the basic dressmaking tools, the sewing machine for making clothes, the iron for correct pressing and how to choose paper patterns and fabric. The skills will allow you to alter the pattern to fit, to cut out the pattern pieces and prepare for construction. You will use these three essential skills in all of your future projects.
Materials required You will need a sewing machine and foot pedal (clean and in good working order) with instruction booklet, plus spare bobbins that are correct for the machine, all the feet and accessories including the zipper foot and an overcast foot (if you have one) and universal sewing machine needles sizes 80 & 90. In addition you will need: ? Dressmaking pins ? Cutting out scissors ? Paper scissors ? Small pair of scissors ? Unpicker ? Tape measure ? Fading marker pen or tailors chalk ? Machine sewing thread any colour ? Pieces of fabric to make samples ? Pen, pencil and a ruler ? An A4 folder for your notes and samples If you have a pattern and fabric that you would like to use, then bring this to the first class. The Tutor will discuss with you if it is suitable for the first garment. If not, the fabric and haberdashery required to make the garment can be purchased after the first class. The tutor will have a list of suitable patterns and advice on the fabric to buy.
Homework required Practising at home will be beneficial.
Assessment At the start of the course you will be given your own individual learning plan. Your tutor will record your entry level and together you will track your progress and achievements.
